Hi! I'm Linda Gorman, a senior IM&T/magazine journalism major. A few thoughts on why I want be a part of NEXIS:
• Study Squirrel: A browser extension that pulls on the Quizlet API to show users vocab cards on each page load or new tab (should be published to the app store in the next week or so!).
• Compas: An event aggregation app for college campuses built with Ruby on Rails, presented at the 2014 SU App Challenge.
• Look Back, Act Forward: An interactive map designed to highlight the 2014 Remembrance Scholars, based on an open source project from the 2013 Tribeca Storytelling Innovation Lab.
• A League of their Own (pg 27): I talked to roboticists at Penn, the University of Osaka, and SU to research this story on this summer's RoboCup in Brazil. I've also reported on tech for the DO including a story about last fall's Future Friday.
• Bob: Earlier this fall I 3d printed parts for a miniature robot from a design found on Thingiverse. I'm currently working on wiring everything together and programming my Arduino to control it.
• Leveraging data visualization tools to look at how big news stories break: Where did the story first come out, and who cottened on to it next? Who is citing who? How did social media play into things? How does political bent impact which stories get reported where and when?
• Data visualization and Natural Language Processing: What can language tell us about current social and political trends, and how can those stories be told via data viz? I think it could be intereting to investigate something in regards to gender and race as depicted in the popular media and/or music. I took NLP this fall and picked up a few things, but I'd like to get more into working with the NLTK via Python.
• Microcontrollers/the internet of things: I don't really have particular ideas about what I would want to do with this, but I think it's an exciting area and I'd like to learn more.
The Nexix lab seems like a good place to get connected with people that are self-motivated, creative, and knowledgeable about the kinds of things I'm interested in. As I'm starting to look toward the end of my time at SU, I've really begun to realize just how valuable these kinds of connections can be. I won't always be lucky enough to be surrounded by so many smart and engaged people as I have been here at school. Joining Nexis would be one of the better ways I can think of to make my last semester count.
So that's all -- thanks for your time! And feel free to find me on LinkedIn, Twitter, or Github.
